First winner for tardy Techrico

Ilala Stud stallion Techrico might have created some sort of record when Tech’s Gem scored at Walcha on Saturday.

Tech’s Gem took 10 outings to win but she wasn’t nearly as tardy as Techrico who sired 23 individual starters before one of them broke through.

Techrico was bred in New Zealand by Wally Truscott but never reached the races.  Champion sire Zabeel got him from star filly Vaindarra who was a G2 winner of the 1981 STC Silver Slipper Stakes and was runner-up to stablemate Marscay in that season’s G1 Golden Slipper Stakes.

She foaled the black-type winners Fickle Hostess (G2 STC Magic Night Stakes) and Zabarra (G3 AJC Bill Ritchie Hcp – twice).

Techrico was installed at Ilala Stud in 2005 but four years later he was available for a cut-price $1,100 service fee.  Australian Stud Book records show he only sired two live foals last spring and he wasn’t listed on the Ilala Stud roster in 2010.

Tech’s Gem (3f Techrico – Sapphire Edition by Bletcharm) is prepared by Geoff O’Brien at Quirindi.  Techrico got the winner from a mare who won an Armidale maiden in 22 starts.  There’s no black-type in the pedigree and she’s typical of the mares a $1,100 stallion serves.

Sapphire Edition has a 2yo filly by Amalfi, a yearling filly by Youthful Legs and a filly foal by Bel Danoro.
