Vinery Stud launches its Inglis Easter Sale consignment with a yearling bred to win the 2017 Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes.
Catalogued as Lot 13, the athletic chestnut colt is by 2011 Slipper winner Sepoy from 2003 Slipper winner Polar Success. “He looks a sprinter and an early one at that,” Vinery’s Conor Phelan said at Newmarket’s Stable 4. “He’s light on his feet with a lovely temperament and has been very popular since we started inspections.
“I can’t remember the last time there was an Easter yearling with a Golden Slipper winning sire and dam.”
Vinery sells the colt on behalf of Twin Palms Stud owners Bruce & Jill Johnson and their daughter Kate was soaking up the atmosphere at the sale-grounds on Friday. “Mum and Dad will be back from Europe in time for the first session on Tuesday,” she explained. “We board Polar Success at Vinery and her Sepoy colt was foaled and reared there.”
Kate has a Golden Slipper pedigree of her own going back to her grandfather Stan Johnson who bred 1996 Golden Slipper winner Merlene. He sold the Danehill filly for $100,000 at the 1995 Inglis Easter Sale to Lloyd Williams and Kerry Packer.
What’s more, Twin Palms Stud is located no more than a kilometre from where 1977 Golden Slipper winner Luskin Star was born in the Hunter Valley.
The Johnson family continues to support Vinery sires. Polar Success (Success Express) has an All Too Hard colt on the ground and their mare Grand Daughter (Redoute’s Choice) has a filly foal by More Than Ready.
