Zabrasive highlighted an excellent day of results for Haunui Farm on Saturday when he scored a tight but tenacious victory in the G1 Rosehill Guineas. Haunui shuttler Elusive City completed a winning double for the Auckland based stud when his colt Chiswick Bey won England’s first juvenile winner of the year on Saturday night.
Zabrasive (Zabeel) was raised at Haunui Farm for breeders Don and Rochelle McLaren and sold for $95,000as part of its draft at the 2008 NZB Karaka Premier Sale.
“We have had a very long association with Don and Rochelle and I know what a great thrill this win is for them,” Haunui studmaster Mark Chitty said. “John O’Shea was over here in December and said Zabrasive would be his Derby horse even though he had only won a maiden at that stage.”
Zabrasive is the fourth foal of stakes winning mare Danasia (Danehill) and Haunui Farm will offer his younger half brother by O’Reilly at the Inglis Easter yearling sale as Lot 369.
“The Guineas is a pretty significant pedigree update,” Chitty said. “He would have been a well inspected colt anyway but I’d say he will definitely be a little busier on the sale ground now.”
Chiswick Bey (Ire) delivered a telling turn of foot down the middle of the track to win the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster on Saturday.
Chiswick Bey (2c Elusive City -Victoria Lodge by Grand Lodge) is trained by Richard Fahey who prepared a winning treble on the traditional opening day of the flat season at Doncaster’s Lincoln meeting.
“It is a very special race to win and he’s a very nice horse,” owner Norman Steel said. “We were going on holiday but Richard rang and said to cancel it and come to the races.”
Elusive City was England’s Champion first-season sire in 2008 and has sired 37 winners at a 64% strike-rate in Australia and NZ.
He is a son of Darley sire Elusive Quality and has shuttled to Haunui Farm since 2004. He stands for an NZ$8,000 fee alongside Don Eduardo and Iffraaj.
