Vinery’s champion stallion More Than Ready is back on centre stage for the G1 Golden Slipper after his colt Brightexpectations scored a runaway victory in the G2 Pago Pago Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.
More Than Ready sired Sebring and Phelan Ready to claim the last two editions of the Slipper and a hat-trick is on the cards according to trainer Gai Waterhouse.
Brightexpectations won the Wyong Magic Millions in December and was narrowly beaten by Hinchinbrook first-up in the G3 Skyline Stakes earlier this month. “He’s been underrated from Day 1 but I couldn’t be happier with him,” Waterhouse said. “He has muscled up and is peaking at the right time.”
Waterhouse will be gunning for a fourth Golden Slipper having already won with Ha Ha (2001), Dance Hero (2004) and Sebring (2008).
Brightexpectations (2c More Than Ready – Miss Brightman by Unbridled’s Song) is raced by a syndicate that includes her daughter Kate. He was a $150,000 buy out of the Torryburn Stud draft at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
More Than Ready got him from Hawkesbury juvenile winner Miss Brightman. Second dam Espina (Danehill) was a Sandown winner for Lloyd Williams and Kerry Packer in 1997. She is a half-sister to G3 AJC Canonbury Stakes Brilliance (Rory’s Jester).
