Aquanita trainers Robert Smerdon and Liam Birchley completed an interstate double on Wednesday with Hussonet maiden winners Ozone Bar and Gorgonzola.
Hussonet transferred to Cornerstone Stud in South Australia this year by arrangement with Arrowfield Stud. He is bubbling just under the Top 10 in the winners section of the Australian sires’ premiership with 49 winners of 66 races so far this season.
Ozone Bar (3g Hussonet – Loftily by Shovhog) was placed on debut at Moonee Valley and consequently started an odds-on favourite at Ballarat. He lived right up to that rating with a four length victory in the Sportsbet Maiden Plate (1200m).
Hong Kong based Price Bloodstock manager Jenny Chapman bought him for $80,000 out of the Invermien Stud consignment at the 2010 Inglis Easter yearling sale. His dam Loftily won 8 sprints in Sydney for Geoff and Beryl White and was also stakes placed at Randwick, Rosehill and Hawkesbury.
Hussonet’s current leader in Hong Kong is the David Hall trained Familists who was a G3 runner-up in the Ladies’ Purse at Sha Tin in October. He had won the 2009 STC The Rosebud when racing as Hus Der Lieften
Liam Birchley prepared the second leg of the Hussonet / Aquanita double at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.
Birchley will branch out on his own in the New Year and he left Aquanita on a winning note when Gorgonzola scored a front-running victory in the Hidden Dragon @ Lyndhurst Maiden (1200m)
Gorgonzola (3f Hussonet – Bluevien by Bluebird) cost $75,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions National Sale. She is a younger half-sister to Brisbane winner Startsmeup (Danzero) who has also been stakes placed on interstate trips to Rosehill and Flemington.
Hussonet can close 2011 in style when Roses In The Glen attempts a hat-trick at Moonee Valley on New Year’s Eve. Owner-breeders Tim and Di Dennis kept her to race after the filly failed to reach a $50,000 reserve at the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.
Roses In The Glen is prepared by Mick Price and she is the $3.50 favourite in pre-post markets for the Adapt Australia Premium Hcp (1200m) on Saturday night.
