Juddmonte colt dominates Dewhurst Stakes

Star colt Frankel was part of a Group 1 double for Juddmonte Farms at the Champion Stakes meeting at Newmarket on Saturday.

Frankel won the G1 Dewhurst Stakes and his stablemate Twice Over the Champion Stakes to continue an amazing run of success for Juddmonte owner Khalid Abdulla and trainer Henry Cecil this year.

Frankel (2c Galileo – Kind by Danehill) turned a red-hot renewal of the Dewhurst into a procession.  He justified an odds-on quote with authority to reinforce his reputation as Europe’s Champion 2YO in 2010.

Under a hand ride from Tom Queally, Frankel thundered past the early leader Roderic O’Connor (Galileo) and then opened up to score by more than two lengths.

The Henry Cecil trained colt was coming off a 10-length rout in the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot and he is now unbeaten in four starts.  “I’ve never had a two-year-old who works like him,’ Cecil said.  “The last juvenile I saw of this calibre was Arazi.

Frankel is already an even-money for the next English 2000 Guineas back at Newmarket in May 2011.

The previously unbeaten duo of Dream Ahead (Diktat) and Saamidd (Street Cry) were expected to keep Frankel honest but they were both beaten a long way from home.

Twice Over defended his Champion Stakes crown successfully with a convincing victory over the favourite Vision D’Etat.  He won by a half length from Mawatheeq in 2009.

Twice Over (5h Observatory – Double Crossed by Caerleon) pounced on G1 Arlington Million winner Debussy at the 400m mark and then forged clear under Tom Queally.  “Twice Over was marvellous,” Queally said.  “He finished off the race and felt as good as ever.  It’s a great privilege for me to ride horses like this.”

Trainer Henry Cecil said Twice Over is a stable favourite and will stay in training next year.  “We will take him back for the Dubai World Cup and hopefully he gets a better draw than this year.  He won’t go to the Breeders’ Cup because Khalid Abdullah does not want to run him on dirt in America.”
