A King of Roses colt topped Day 2 of the Magic Millions Adelaide yearling sale when he was purchased by Marilyn Smith for $52,000. Smith secured the colt, who was the last lot in the catalogue on behalf of Top End based operation G & C Pastoral.
“A really lovely colt – the pick of today’s sale,” Smith said after outlasting a number of under-bidders on the attractive youngster. “He has a great head, is well put together and is extremely well balanced.”
Smith said she wasn’t surprised she had to go to a session topping price to secure the colt from the draft of Fairways Bloodstock. “He is by a handy sire and the cross has worked well with his full brother performing well overseas.”
King Of Roses (Fairy King) is from the family of G1 winners Spirit Of Kingston, Rose Of Kingston and Kingston Rule but his own career was prematurely ended by a fractured sesamoid.
Owner David Hains stood King Of Roses privately and, after a spell at Independent Stallions Victoria, he was transferred to Greenacres Stud in NZ’s South Island.
All up on Wednesday, over $1.44 million was traded on 123 lots at an average of $11,713. “To have the clearance rate increase from 76% last year to 85% is very encouraging.” Magic Millions Acting Managing Director David Chester noted.
“No other yearling sale in Australasia this year can boast such a high clearance rate – and this is working off figures derived on the day – without further lots being sold post-sale.”
