Last Derby Down Under for Galileo

Galileo gets his last chance to sire an Australian bred Derby winner in the coming weeks.  The Coolmore champion shuttled to the Hunter Valley for five seasons until 2006 but came up empty in his first four crops.

Perth based galloper View The Stars can set the record straight when he starts in the G1 WATC Derby on April 2.  The Paul Jordan trained stayer looked every inch a classic colt when he scored a determined victory in the Listed Roberts Stakes at Ascot last Saturday.

“Not many horses come from well off the speed in 1800m races at Ascot so I told Brad (Parnham) to be positive,” Jordan said.  “View The Stars doesn’t possess a great closing sprint but Brad judged the pace perfectly and the horse did the rest.

“We have always had the Derby planned for this colt and hopefully we will be standing here in a month’s time.”

Edward O’Dwyer bred View The Stars and Robyn Wise prepped him for the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale.  He was initially passed in for $125,0000 before Belmont Bloodstock’s Damon Gabbedy bought him on behalf of a syndicate that includes Harvey Crossman, Ron Sayers, Tim Gregory and Jordon.

View The Stars (3c Galileo – Metal Of Honor by Conquistador Cielo) is a half-brother to Sydney winner Olympus (Danehill) who stands at Erin Park at Tamworth.

A Derby Down Under would be a fitting finale for Galileo this year.  He captured the 2001 English – Irish Derby double and has sired Soldier Of Fortune (2007 Irish Derby), New Approach (2008 English Derby), Cima De Triomphe (2008 Derby Italiano) and Cape Blanco (2010 Irish Derby).

His latest crop of classic colts includes unbeaten Juddmonte star Frankel who is a clear-cut $6 pre-post favourite for the 2011 English Derby on June 4.  Galileo’s Coolmore colts Roderic O’Connor and Seville are on the next line at $13 and a third Ballydoyle based son Long Live The King is at $26.
