Former Coolmore sire Law Society has died in Germany aged 29. He had been pensioned by Gestut Isarland owner Ulrike Castle in 2008.
Bred in Kentucky by Lane’s End Farm owner William S. Farish, he was sold at the 1983 Keeneland July yearling sale for $2.70 million to Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos.
Trained by Vincent O’Brien, Law Society (Alleged) was a two year old winner of the G2 Irish National Stakes and was runner-up in the G1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. The following year he was runner-up to Slip Anchor in the 1985 English Derby before defeating Theatrical in its Irish equivalent a month later.
He was retired to Coolmore Stud in 1986 and moved to Gestut Isarland in 1992.
His 40 stakes winners included Court Of Honour who was a G1 winner in Italy before arriving in Australia to win the G2 Moonee Valley Cup and LR Mornington Cup.
Court Of Honour and fellow Lindsay Park stakes winner Ihtiram were sold to stand at Ray Cochrane’s Wayandah Stud in 1999. Ihtiram went on to sire champion sprinter Miss Andretti and is still going strong at Oakland Park Stud which is in stark contrast to his old stablemate.
Court Of Honour never really recovered from travel sickness and died after serving a handful of mares at Wayandah.
