Laurel Oak Bloodstock (FBAA) found the right race for promising filly Lipizzan in a Canterbury maiden on Wednesday.

The Sebring youngster had been runner-up in the LR Woodlands Stakes (1100m) at Scone earlier this month and she appreciated the drop back in grade for a front-running victory over Godolphin filly Tikki Bar.

Laurel Oak manager Louis Mihalyka and trainer Gary Portelli bought Lipizzan for $120,000 at the 2016 Inglis Easter yearling sale and were keen to get her off the mark after placings in all three starts.

“I told Louis we should go back to a mid-weeker for an easy kill,” Portelli said. “I thought she could win first-up at Scone but she used a fair bit of petrol from an outside draw and was just found wanting over the last 50 metres.

“She’s a very capable filly and now we will step her up to Saturday company.”

Lipizzan (2f Sebring – Absolutely Flying by Commands) is from a half-sister to G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Camporella (Exceed and Excel).  Second-dam Really Flying (Real Quiet) won a LR Dark Jewel Classic at Scone.

The Canterbury win came shortly after Mihalyka farewelled Group 1 stallion Rebel Dane from Box 14 at Portelli’s Warwick Farm stables.  He transferred to Swettenham Stud last Thursday.
