Makybe bred colt Common Interest continued an amazing week for Tony Santic at Sandown on Wednesday.
Common Interest (3c More Than Ready – Common Smytzer by Snippets) strengthened his claims for the spring classics with a brilliant victory in the Beau Sovereign Handicap on the Hillside circuit.
The Lee Freedman colt was racing second-up after promising plenty during a short autumn campaign. He won on debut at Bendigo and earned a trip to Sydney after defeating fellow Makybe-bred colt Starspangledbanner (Choisir) in a Listed race at Flemington.
Common Interest put his unbeaten record on the line in the G2 Darley Stakes at Rosehill in March, however, he lost a plate and was never on the right foot going clockwise in the race won by Tickets.
Freedman will now concentrate on a Group event for Common Interest who is raced in partnership by Arrowfield Stud, Blue Sky Thoroughbreds and Alan Jones’ Belford Productions.
The Sandown victory came just days after Makybe Diva (Desert King) gave birth to her third foal at Segenhoe Stud. Santic’s Melbourne Cup legend foaled a filly by Coolmore Stud’s Australian champion stallion Encosta De Lago. She will be bred back to Vinery sire More Than Ready.
Makybe Diva’s dam Tugela (Riverman) also produced a filly by Redoute’s Choice last week and she is booked to visit Darley sire Exceed And Excel.
Meanwhile, last start Caulfield stakes winners Starspangledbanner (McNeil Stakes) and Corsaire (Quezette Stakes) are poised to continue the Makybe momentum in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington this Saturday.
