Marwina rhymes with winner and it’s also a pretty good way to describe the Riverdene Stud resident.
Marwina has been a reliable winner-getter for Riverdene owner Dr Kevin Pendergast siring 289 individual winners by the end of August 2009. And he has built at that total at a tremendous winners-to-runners strike-rate of 61%.
The best of the Marwina stock has been Marwin Gold who knocked up winning 20 races including the Listed AJC June Stakes at Randwick. Down south, his consistent gelding Hillston Exchange has banked over $420,000 for connections with the Listed VRC Winter Championship his career high.
Marwina (Marscay-Orwhina by Vain) is also doing a sterling job keeping Star Kingdom’s name fading from view. In 2008-09, he finished right behind Glenlogan Park stallion Show A Heart and just above Darley sire Canny Lad among stallions from that legendary sireline.
The son of Marscay has picked up where he left off last season with 9 winners during August including the promising Perth filly Power Princess. The Chris Stelmach trained three year-old scored a devastating debut win at Belmont Park on August 26 when she justified favouritism with a crushing four-length win over 1000 metres in 58.48s.
Power Princess (3f Marwina-All Electric by Canonise) is a full sister to the former Stelmach-trained gelding Blind Power who won six races from 15 starts a few years ago.
Marwina was a brilliant sprinter in his own right and reserved his best for Royal Randwick. He won five races at headquarters starting with a debut victory in the Listed Breeders’ Plate and then went on to carry Geoff and Beryl White’s colours to Group 3 wins in the Stan Fox Stakes and Roman Consul Stakes. His best interstate performance came when he was beaten a length by St Covet in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.
The Whites raced Marscay to a G1 triumph in the Golden Slipper and then supported him for many years at Widden Stud. They also owned Marwina’s full brother Jetball who carved out a successful stud career of his own after winning the G1 Galaxy Handicap at Randwick.
Marwina has been a remarkably consistent stallion over the years and, if anything, seems to be improving with age. He maintains a high fertility rate and winners-to-runners strike-rate so it’s no wonder he remains a popular sire in the Riverina and with breeders further afield.
Marwina will stand for a $5,500 (inc gst) service fee this year. The Riverdene roster also includes newcomer Bon Hoffa (Belong To Me), Exceed And Excel’s half brother Enemy Of Average (Fusaichi Pegasus), Zariz (Mukkadamah), Half Hennessy (Hennessy), Seidnazar (Rory’s Jester) and Sports Works (Bluebird).
