Me Hungi heads to Warrnambool

Me Hungi confirmed he’s on course for the Warrnambool carnival with a last-stride victory in the Elmore Cup (1600m) at Bendigo on Saturday.

The Lago Delight gelding was racing second-up after a summer spell and the performance was a pleasant surprise for connections.  “I thought he may have needed the run but he fought on like a bulldog,” trainer Geoff Daffy admitted.  “It was extra special because the owners are all locals and they’re wonderful people.”

Me Hungi (5g Lago Delight – Tara’s Range by Polish Laughter) has claimed 3 of his 7 wins at Warrnambool and he also added the Donald Cup in November.  “We’ve had Warrnambool on the radar since he came back into work.  I reckon his best distance is around a mile and our confidence levels would soar if it’s a rain-affected track.”

Daffy is based at Camperdown and he will nominate Me Hungi for an Open Hcp over 1700 metres on the opening day of the carnival on Tuesday, April 29.

Me Hungi’s dam Tara’s Range won races at Sandown (2), Moonee Valley and the Summer Cup at Cranbourne under the guidance of trainer Mick Price.

His sire Lago Delight (Encosta de Lago) was a Listed winner of the 2003 Mitchell McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley before retiring to Bombora Downs on the Mornington peninsula.  There have been 32 winners of 43races this season and he’s just about to go through $700,000 in prizemoney.

“He gets winners every week – good looking, tough, honest horses,” Bombora Downs studmaster Christoph Bruechert said.  “If you are on a budget, you won’t find a better stallion.”

Lago Delight is also the damsire of Peggy Jean.  The Myboycharlie filly won the G1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes last Saturday and will back up in the G1 ATC Champagne Stakes on April 26.
