Newgate Farm signs Criterion

Criterion (NZ) is set to join the star studded stallion roster at Newgate Farm in the Hunter Valley this year.

The five year-old son of Sebring is a homebred for Sir Owen Glenn and has earned over $7 million since winning the LR Black Opal and G2 Todman Stakes as a two year-old.

He returned at three to score at the highest level in the Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby and he came back last season for another Group 1 victory in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick.

Sent to England, he was unplaced in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and Juddmonte International at York before returning home for a fourth Group 1 in the Caulfield Stakes in October.  “It is a real privilege to be entrusted with such an exceptional racehorse,” Newgate’s Henry Field said.  “He’s the type of horse every breeder dreams of breeding and every owner dreams of owning.”

Trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig have indicated Criterion will resume in the G1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 5 before progressing to the G1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) on March 19 and G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 9.

He will join a Newgate roster that includes Foxwedge, Dissident, Deep Field, Sizzling, The Factor, Eurozone and Wandjina.
