New Zealand stayer Our Alchemist came from 10 lengths off the pace to win her second Greymouth Cup (2000m) on Sunday.

The Lucky Unicorn mare sprinted home with a swift half-mile sectional to defeat stablemate Willy Duggan by more than a length.

“I was told to be up handy but they just went that quick I couldn’t go with them,” jockey David Walsh said.  “I knew they had to come back to me at some stage.  I got on to Willy Duggan’s back and got a really good drag into the race.  She will only improve off that win.”

Our Alchemist (6m Lucky Unicorn – Silver Star by Sun And Shine) is based with Kevin Myers at Wanganui but reserves her best efforts for the South Island’s west-coast circuit.  She won last year’s Greymouth Cup and followed up with a second in the Golden Nuggets at Kumara and a victory in the Scenicland Stakes at Hokitika.

Two years ago, the mare was runner-up in the Hec Sinclair Memorial at Kumara and then bolted in by 16 lengths at Hokitika.

Our Alchemist is owned by the Coombe Road Racing Syndicate has been nominated to go one better in this year’s Golden Nuggets this Saturday.  She is the final foal of Silver Star who won the Champagne Juvenile Stakes at Riccarton.

Lucky Unicorn (Redoute’s Choice) stands at Westbury Park in Pinjarra after starting his stud career in New Zealand.  His final crop of Kiwi bred yearlings includes a half-brother to Moonee Valley stakes winner Cauthen who has been catalogued as Lot 534 at the Karaka Select Sale on January 28.
