Port Macquarie mare Pentasia has a wing on every hoof and she scored another jet-propelled victory at Wyong on Thursday.
Pentasia (4m Pentire – Ecstasia by Singspiel) was in a race of her own winning the Magic Millions Hcp (1200m) by next to four lengths. She clocked 1.09.34s which was 0.31s faster than Safusa took to win the Magic Millions 3YO Stakes earlier in the day.
Trainer Marc Quinn will take her to town in the New Year and he also mentioned the Queen Of The North Stakes at Port Macquarie as a longer-term target in February. “My job is to eventually find a suitable stakes race for her,” Quinn said. “Some black-type would be invaluable as a broodmare.”
Pentasia is by Rich Hill stallion Pentire and she was headline news in October after shattering the Grafton track record in an 1100 metre maiden! She won by 13 lengths in a blistering 1.01.84s.
The mare was beaten as an odds-on favourite next time out at Gosford but there were excuses. “She has some hoof problems so it’s a bit of a balancing act,” Quinn said. “I keep her fit with lots of swimming and it also relieves the pressure off her legs.”
Owner-breeder Grant Briscoe sent the mare to Port Macquarie based Quinn after she failed to show up with Guy Walter at Warwick Farm. “She was still a bit immature and may not have liked the environment down in Sydney,” he explained. “But she’s been really impressive since coming up here.”
Briscoe bought her dam Ecstasia from Rich Hill for $17,000 at the 2007 NZ Bloodstock Autumn Sale. The Japanese bred mare was carrying the Port Macquarie flyer when she changed hands at Karaka.
Pentasia is the latest chapter in what’s turning out to be quite an eventful season for Pentire.
The Rich Hill champion has (King) Mufhasa racing in career-best form as a seven year-old. A former NZ Horse of the Year, he won the G1 Makfi Stakes at Hastings in August and then claimed the G1 Toorak Hcp at Caulfield in October.
The Steven McKee trained iron-horse is a last start winner of the G1 Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham and he will be gunning for a third victory in the G1 Telegraph Stakes at Trentham on January 21.
Pentire’s latest Group 1 winner arrived when He’s Remarkable was first past the post in the Railway Stakes at Ascot last month. But, in a controversial decision, Perth stewards upheld a protest from runner-up Luckygray. The verdict incensed his connections and their appeal will be heard by the WA Racing Tribunal on January 24.
Pentire has 31 lots entered for the NZ Bloodstock Premier yearling sale starting next month at Karaka. A dozen of them have been catalogued by Rich Hill.
