Arrowfield sire Starcraft unearthed a feature winner of the future when Big Luka unleashed a storming finish at Seymour on Thursday. He came from the clouds to win the Eddy-Veitz Maiden Plate (1412m) running away on debut.
The Anthony Freedman trained colt impressed winning jockey Danny Moor who had been working him in private. “He’s a lovely type,” Moor explained. “They were going fast up front and he relaxed and travelled nicely.
“I wanted to stay on the fence but was forced to go wide. He let down nicely and will learn a lot from that.”
Big Luka (3c Starcraft – Super Blue by Montjeu) sold for $40,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions HIT Sale. His dam Super Blue is an unraced half-sister to Listed AJC Reginald Allen Hcp winner Sara’s Choice (Choisir).
Super Blue was owned by Paul Makin and he also raced Starcraft to G1 victories in New Zealand, Australia, France and England.
Makin sold Super Blue when she was carrying Big Luka in 2008. She is now owned by the Thomson family of Batesman’s Bay and the mare has a yearling filly by recently deceased sire Prince of Praise.
Starcraft (NZ) stands for a $44,000 (inc gst) service fee at Arrowfield Stud. He has 17 yearlings entered for the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions including 8 from Arrowfield.
