Perth sprinter wins Hareeba Stakes

Mungrup Stud sire Oratorio claimed his first black-type winner in the Eastern States when Damien Oliver steered Like An Eagle to a Listed victory in the Hareeba Stakes (1200m) at Mornington on Wednesday.

The Australian bred son of Stravinsky is highly regarded in Western Australia where he has been represented by stakes winners the calibre of Waratah’s Secret, Clueless Angel, Motion Pictures, Gold Rocks and Latoria.

Oratorio (Aus) stands for a State high of $27,500 and his latest crop of yearlings were in the demand at the Perth Magic Millions on Tuesday.  Three of his colts finished in the Top 10 on the Premier Session leader-board.

Like An Eagle (4g Oratorio – Stormy Business by Metal Storm) was bred by his Bunbury based trainer Ross Price and the gelding is part owned by former champion jockey Rod Kemp.

Price’s son Clint travelled to Victoria with Like An Eagle and headed to the Hareeba after discussing options with Oliver.  He became the fourth Perth visitor to win the Mornington sprint following Ellicorsam (2006), Surtee (1993) and Sky Filou (1988).

“It’s great to win a Listed race over here,” Clint Price said.  “Like An Eagle has got a lot of ability.  He will run at Moonee Valley on March 2 before tackling the Newmarket Hcp.”

Like An Eagle claimed a Northam maiden in May last year and then won four in a row during the Belmont Park season between July and September.  He is a younger half-brother to G3 Belmont Sprint winner Beat The Storm (Scenic).  Their dam Stormy Business is a sister to LR Challenge Stakes winner Oxidation.
