Predator targets Tasmanian Guineas

Exceed And Excel is firing in both hemispheres and the Darley shuttler has rejuvenated gelding Predator heading for the LR Tasmanian Guineas in the New Year.

Predator was originally trained by John McArdle in Victoria but lost his way after finishing third to Golden Archer at Flemington this time last year.

Since being relocated to Darryl Horner Snr at Spreyton, the gelding has gradually returned to form with a second to Bionic Star in the Tony Carrick 3YO Vase before a luckless fifth behind Buzzing Along in the Jackson Motors 3YO Cup.

Predator (3g Exceed And Excel – Chanteloup by Grand Lodge) led all the way under Brendon McCoull for a two length victory in the Grahame Family Funerals 3YO Plate in Hobart last Sunday.

“He was entitled to win,” Horner said.  “He’s a quality horse and we will give him a fortnight off and then get ready for the Guineas.”

The $90,000 Listed Tasmanian Guineas over 1600m is set down for January 4 in Hobart.

“I think he will get a mile,” Horner explained.  “Brendon reckons he will run the trip as long as he switches off and learns to relax.”

Predator was bred by Richard Pietrykowski and Johnson Thoroughbreds and was catalogued for the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  He failed to make a $150,000 reserve and is now raced by Herman and Saskia van Lulofs-Umbgrove.

His British bred dam Chanteloup retired a maiden but she was fourth home in the 2004 edition of the G3 York Musidora Stakes behind Darley’s outstanding Danehill filly Punctilious.

After Predator, Chanteloup foaled a Rock Of Gibraltar colt that was sent to South Africa.  The mare died in March 2010.

Exceed And Excel has sired 434 winners world-wide at a 64% strike-rate.  There are 43 stakes winners among that total and his exciting Perth colt Born To Excel can add his name to the black-type roll-call in the G3 Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic at Ascot this Saturday.
