Glenlogan Park freshman Real Saga sired his first winner at Eagle Farm on Saturday and within minutes he doubled up at Gold Coast.
Real Surreal (2f Real Saga – Stolen Beauty by Mossman) did plenty wrong but was still too good for her rivals in the Broncos Hcp (1000m) at Eagle Farm. The Kelso Wood trained youngster settled just worse than midfield but shied wide and lost plenty of valuable ground approaching the home turn.
Once balanced by apprentice Rosie Myers, the filly flattened out and charged to the line to score narrowly from Choisenegger (Choisir) and Craiglea Cruz (Warhead). “I am gobsmacked – that was some effort!” Wood claimed. “She has always shown ability so I’m not surprised, however, to give away such a huge amount of ground indicates she has a super future.”
Real Surreal is raced by owner-breeder Michelle Lang-McMahon with her mother Glenys Lang and their stable manager Polly Williams. “I can’t wait to see what she will do when she puts it all together,” Wood added. “We will be back for a Listed race here in December before heading to the Magic Millions Classic.”
Her dam Stolen Beauty’s only other foal to race has been Laming’s G3 Vo Rogue Plate winner Benny’s Buttons (Refuse to Bend). The mare is a half-sister to Great Crusader (Our Maizcay) who won the G2 STC Todman Slipper Stakes and GCTC Magic Millions 2YO Superbowl Final.
Another Real Saga youngster heading towards the Magic Millions is Solo Saga. The Bevan Laming trained gelding also impressed minutes later in the Civil Contractors Plate (900m) at the Gold Coast.
Solo Saga (2g Real Saga – Sarday by Anabaa) was retained by his breeder Joan Foster and she races him in partnership with Bevan’s wife Jenny. He clipped heels on the corner but recovered and won running away from Threescoreandten (Saint Thomas) and Dragon Street (Hidden Dragon).
The youngster is bred to be much better over longer trips. His dam is a half-sister to G1 Waikato International winner Greene Street (Zabeel) and G3 AJC Craven Plate winner Cateclipse (Catbird).
Real Saga (Tale Of The Cat) burst on to the scene with an effortless victory in the LR AJC Breeders’ Plate in October 2008. A precocious individual, he followed up with wins in the G3 MRC Blue Diamond Prelude and STC G2 Todman Slipper Trial before finishing an unlucky fourth as favourite in Phelan Ready’s G1 Golden Slipper.
Real Saga wasn’t seen again and was retired to Glenlogan Park where he stands for a $13,200 (inc gst) service fee.
