If ever a horse deserved to break his maiden status, it was last-start Hobart winner Begabretro.

The Delago Brom gelding delivered the goods in the CDC Developments Tas Maiden Plate (1400m) for trainer Gary White and owner Troy Stewart.

Begabretro (3g Delago Brom – Angelika by Ark Regal) had been placed at two of his three previous outings despite being the victim of a bad barrier and bad luck in running.

“Begabretro should have won before now but at least his maiden is tucked away and we can press on from here,” White said.  “He has a lot of natural ability and I’m confident the horse will go on and win more races.

Stephen Maskiell gave Begabretro the run of the race in Hobart and they forged clear in the straight to score convincingly over Speedy Ceed (Ladoni) and Gee Gees Beauty (Atlantis Prince).

White purchased Begabretro for $16,000 from Macleay Thoroughbreds at the 2009 Tasmanian Magic Millions yearling sale.

“I phoned Troy and told him there was a horse he should buy,” White recalled.  “But he was locked away in a meeting when the horse entered the sale ring.  I couldn’t get in touch with him so I bought the horse anyway.”

Thankfully, Stewart was pleased with what he saw and hopefully there’s more wins in store starting with a Class 1 in Launceston on Thursday, April 14.
Begabretro is a younger half-brother to Extreme Cost (Snaadee) who won seven sprints for Stewart and White

Their dam Angelika has also foaled the Tassie winners Roll The Shoe (Telesto) and Prince Obama (Clangalang).  The mare delivered colts by Eliza Park sire Shinzig in 2009 and 2010.  She was covered by Armidale Stud sire Savoire Vivre last year.

Begabretro is by Eliza Park resident Delago Brom who has sired 120 winners of 250 races at a 49% strike-rate.
