Bart Cummings and long-standing client Dato Tan Chin Nam are set for another Melbourne Cup pay-day this afternoon with Viewed and Roman Emperor.
Roman Emperor (4h Montjeu – Gussy Godiva by Last Tycoon) has only won two races – both on dead tracks – including the G1 AJC Australian Derby in April.
His dam Gussy Godiva won four races up to 2000m including the VRC Sanderae Hcp at Flemington. She is a half-sister to Black Mamba, a Black Minnaloushe filly who left New Zealand to win a Group 1 event at Del Mar last year.
Roman Emperor is by Montjeu who has no peer siring stayers. His NZ bred colt Nom du Jeu won the 2008 AJC Australian Derby and returned last spring to finish second to All The Good in the Caulfield Cup.
Roman Emperor was runner-up in the Caulfield Cup this year and will go into the Melbourne Cup as one of the best handicapped runners in the race.
