Scarlet Billows continues purple-patch for Richards

Melbourne Cup winning part-owner John Richards was still toasting Prince Of Penzance when his mare Scarlet Billows claimed the last race on the card at Flemington.

“It’s just a wonderful, wonderful day,” Richards declared after the G3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m).  “It’s unbelievable really.  We were up there celebrating and all along we thought our mare was a big chance.”

Scarlet Billows (5m Street Boss – Hushabye Baby Hussonet) settled in sixth position in the early stages before moving into the race strongly entering the home straight.  She dashed to the lead at the furlong before going on to defeat Wawail by more than two lengths.

The Darren Weir trained mare is the 20th stakes winner by Darley Victoria stallion Street Boss (USA) and the Group 3 improved her career card to 5 wins in 20 starts for earnings of $316,320.

Richards and Melville Charles bought Scarlet Billows from Kristinvale Stables for $20,000 at the 2012 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.  They also raced that year’s Super VOBIS Horse of the Year Ava’s Delight (Artie Schiller).

Scarlet Billows was bred by Fred Borg and her dam Hushabye Baby is a daughter of G3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Smytzer’s Rivalry (Made Of Gold).  The mare has a yearling filly by Anacheeva and a Reward For Effort colt foaled on October 11.

Street Boss is standing at Darley’s Northwood Park for a fee of $11,000 (inc gst).
