Silvano has begun covering his latest book of mares at Maine Chance Stud in South Africa after serving 90 mares in Germany. He is the first South African-based sire to ever shuttle to Europe.
Silvano (Lomitas) was raced by owner-breeder Andreas Jacobs and was a G1 winner of the Arlington Million, HK Queen Elizabeth Cup and Singapore Cup. He also ran fourth in the controversial 2001 Cox Plate behind Northerly, Sunline and Viscount.
“He was very well received at Gestüt Fährhof in Germany and he arrived back here on September 2,” Maine Chance manager John Slade said. “He already has 85 mares booked for this season.”
Silvano was Germany’s Champion first-season sire in 2005 and was second to Galileo in the European second season sires’ premiership in 2006.
He has also been a big success in South Africa where he was Champion second season sire in 2007/08. His progeny include last year’s South African Derby winner Kings Gambit and South African Oaks winner Happy Spirit.
