Matterhorn (Rock of Gibraltar) opened the Karaka account with an on-pace victory in the My Royal Captain Hcp (1600m) for trainer Michael Freedman. He was a $100,000 purchase from Lyndhurst Farm at the NZB 2009 Karaka Premier Sale and has since banked over $250,000 for Horizon Stable.
The expat Kiwi combination of trainer Bruce Marsh and jockey Opie Bosson won with Glownight Racer (Pins) in the Taurus Hcp (1400m).
Purchased by Bruce Perry Bloodstock for $105,000 from Waikato Stud at the 2008 Karaka Premier Sale, Glownight Racer won three races at home before transferring to Singapore here he carries to colours of Tudor Lodge Stable.
Marsh brought up a winning double when Red Beard (Zenno Rob Roy) took out the Jolie’s Shinju Hcp (1400m) for Auric Stable. “He’s a top performer,” Marsh claimed. “He was a Derby candidate but had problems so we just took our time to bring him back.”
A $22,000 purchase from Walnut Hill Farm at the 2009 NZB National Weanling Sale, Red Beard has won 6 of his 8 starts for over $270,000 in stakes.
Afternoon Delight (No Excuse Needed) broke her maiden in the My Royal Captain Hcp (1400m) for Here for the Cash Stable. She is trained by Stephen Gray and was offered by Brighthill Farm at the 2010 Karaka Premier Sale before winning two trials in New Zealand.
Martin (Colombia) hit the board for the second time on Sunday for Oscar Racing Stable. He had been runner-up on debut at Otaki for trainers Sue Thompson and Mick Brown before transferring off-shore.
Martin is now under the care of Laurie Laxon and had broken his maiden in April by two lengths. He was offered by Newmarket Lodge at the 2010 South Island 2YO Sale.
The last of the six Karaka winners in Singapore on Sunday was the Leslie Khoo trained Lucky Rise (Handsome Ransom) in the Speed Baby Hcp (1400m). He was a $34,000 purchase from Ashwell Farm at the 2008 Karaka Festival Sale and has earned over $140,000 for Celestial King Stable.
