Six of the best for Galileo

Galileo grabbed another Group 1 on the weekend, this time in New York, where Coolmore colt Cape Blanco won the Man o’ War Stakes (2200m) at Belmont Park.

Cape Blanco (4c Galileo – Laurel Delight by Presidium) claimed the 2010 Irish Derby but had been searching for his first win this year after losses in the Dubai World Cup, Prix Ganay and Queen Anne Stakes.

Saturday’s North American Group 1 is the sixth for Galileo in the last month following Treasure Beach (Irish Derby), Golden Lilac (French Oaks), Frankel (St James Palace Stakes), Misty For Me (Pretty Polly Stakes) and Igugu (Durban July Hcp).

Cape Blanco shadowed the pace at Belmont and then ranged up alongside Mission Approved for a brief battle at the top of the straight.  Once balanced by Jamie Spencer, he clicked into gear and pulled away to score by over two lengths from Gio Ponti (Tale of the Cat) and Boisterous (Distorted Humor).

“When I joined the leader, he changed stride and lost a front shoe but that was the only worry I had throughout the race,” Spencer said.  “He’s high-class horse and I’m glad he’s come back to form.”

The Ballydoyle colt is the second son of Galileo to land the Man o’ War Stakes after Red Rocks in 2008.  His next assignment is likely to be the Arlington Million.

Cape Blanco has won 7 of his 13 starts and earned $2.97 million.  The chestnut was unbeaten as a juvenile and continued his winning streak at three in last year’s G2 Dante Stakes when he defeated eventual English Derby and Arc de Triomphe winner Workforce.

Cape Blanco was beaten in the French Derby but rebounded to win the Irish Derby and then added the Irish Champion by five lengths.

Cape Blanco was sold for 330,000 euros as a yearling at the Goffs Orby Sale and is a half-brother to G2 winner Mr O’Brien (Mukaddamah).  Their dam Laurel Delight is herself a half-sister to G2 sprint star Paris House (Petong).
