South African connection for More Than Ready

Vinery champion More Than Ready will have two sire sons retiring to stud in South Africa this year.

Last month, Cape based Varfontein Stud announced Australian bred G1 Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight had been signed to stand at its Paarl based nursery.

This week, industry leader Summerhill Stud said Traffic Guard had been signed to stand at its Kwa-Zulu Natal property.

Traffic Guard (8h More Than Ready – Street Scene by Zafonic) was trained by Paul Cole to win five races from 1200m to 2400m topped by the LR August Stakes at Windsor.  He reached a career high in defeat when a G1 runner-up to New Approach in the 2008 Irish Champion Stakes.

His Dubai based owners Jim and Fitri Hay also raced G1 winners Fame And Glory (Montjeu) and Cape Blanco (Galileo) with the Coolmore conglomerate.

Traffic Guard (USA) is from a half-sister to G1 South African Derby winner Chief Advocate (Law Society).  “He was a top class competitor and raced sound for several seasons,” Summerhill manager Linda Norval said.  “He also represents a great outcross for South African mares.”

In Australia, More Than Ready’s 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Pluck will stand his first southern season alongside his own sire at Vinery this year.
