Sprint Queen reigns at Ascot

You Will Be Queen is a one-dimensional filly and that’s just fine by her trainer Lindsey Smith.

The Kaphero flyer has won 3 of her last 5 starts and she adopted free-wheeling tactics again in the Perth Cup @ Ascot Hcp (1000m) on Wednesday.  Under a well-rated Paul Harvey ride, she responded gamely when tackled by L’rondine (Oratotio) to score by a short neck.

You Will Be Queen (3f Kaphero – Noble Glow by Jeune) is a 1000 metre specialist with a PB of 57.69s down the straight at Pinjarra.  “She is what she is,” Smith said.  “She over-races but can still settle down for a fight like today.

“Paul tried to hold her up early on but one day we will just let her rip and see what happens.”

Smith decided to go ahead at Ascot after a six-day back-up from Pinjarra.  “She looked good after an easy time swimming between runs.  We’ve always rated her a Saturday horse although it seems 1000 metres is her limit at this stage.”

You Will Be Queen was a $57,500 buy for owner Chris Wells at the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.  Her dam Noble Glow won five races in Melbourne and Adelaide for Peter Hayes and Tony McEvoy.  She has a 2yo filly and a yearling filly by Kaphero and foaled a Host (Chi) colt in October.

Kaphero stands for a $6,600 (inc gst) fee at Swettenham Stud and he’s rising up the second-season winners’ table with You Will be Queen (3), Tankster (2), Traumerei, The Terricks, Kapaulenko, Ondamantle and Piccolo Miss all saluting in November – December.
