Champion English 3yo Sea The Stars will attempt to win his third classic in the Irish Derby (G1) at the Curragh this Sunday.
Sea The Stars won the English 2000 Guineas and English Derby at his only outings so far this year. He became the first horse to complete the double since Nashwan in 1989.
The colt was bred in Ireland is a half brother to European champion and influential sire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells). They are from 1993 Arc de Triomphe (G1) winner Urban Sea.
Owner Christopher Tsui has knocked back several offers to sell the Cape Cross colt. “Anyone would want a horse like that,” Sheikh Mohammed said at Royal Ascot. “We are always looking for good stallion prospects.”
Sea The Stars is one of 17 three-year-olds eligible for the Irish Derby and he will be opposed by the Aidan O’Brien trained trio of Fame And Glory, Masterofthehorse and Golden Sword. All three Ballydoyle colts finished in the first five home at Epsom Downs.
The long-term goal for Sea The Stars is the English St. Leger (G1) at Doncaster on September 12. It’s the third leg of the English Triple Crown and no horse has completed the treble since Nijinksy in 1970.
