Promising stayer The Cleaner is no certainty to progress to the AAMI Hobart Cup despite winning the Brighton Cup at Tattersall’s Park on Sunday.
The Cleaner (4g Savoire Vivre – Dash Of Scotch by Blessington) has earned ballot-free entry into the Hobart Cup but Longford trainer Mick Burles said the gelding has a way to go before he will line up in the Tasmania’s premier staying event.
“He’s still a year away from that level,” Burles said. “But it’s still an option. I’ll run him in the Jockey Club Cup and the Summer Cup before making a decision about the Hobart Cup.
“He’s doing everything I’ve asked and just keeps improving and stepping up. He’s the best stayer I’ve trained.”
The Cleaner was rated superbly in front by top jockey Stephen Maskiell in the Brighton Cup. They set a solid tempo over 2100 metres and then raced away to score by over three lengths.
Burles bought him for for $10,000 at the 2009 Tasmanian Magic Millions for a partnership that includes Bill Fawdry, Jim Lowish and Paul Burt. He is a half-brother to Listed TRC One Thousand Guineas winner Private Nip (El Moxie) and Listed TRC Hobart Guineas winner Strait Dash (Aliocha).
Armidale Stud resident Savoire Vivre (Sadler’s Wells) has sired 20 winners for earnings of $440,386 in Australia so far this season. He is running second on the Tasmanian sires’ premiership right behind perennial champion West Quest who has 21 winners for $457,334 in prizemoney.
