Waller milestone at Rosehill

Promising youngster Velrosso made history with a debut victory in the Birch and Waite Foods Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The General Nediym youngster took Chris Waller’s Sydney winner tally to 100 for the current racing season.  The Rosehill trainer bought the winner for $240,000 at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Velrosso (2c General Nediym – Hootenanny by Best Western) was bred and sold by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud.  Harvey kept a share and that paid off when the youngster scored a narrow victory over Able Fast (Fastnet Rock) and Pink Power (Not A Single Doubt).

“He cruised up like he was going to win easily, but just didn’t put them away.” visiting hoop Damien Oliver said.  “He’s going to make a nice horse up to a mile.”

A handsome chestnut colt, Velrosso is the third winner from three to race for the lightly raced Best Western mare Hootenanny.

Velrosso is a full brother to the G2 Pago Pago Stakes winner Sidereus.  Baramul Stud has had a great deal of success with other family members like Kittens, Saint Encosta and Kakakakatie.

Velrosso is one of 10 juvenile winners from the penultimate crop of General Nediym.  His divisional leader is Military Grace, a Listed winner of the B J McLachlan Stakes and Calaway Gal Stakes in Brisbane.
