Yarradale sire tops Tasmanian Magic Millions

Yarradale Stud sire Musket topped the Tasmanian magic Millions with a $60,000 filly from Di’s Angel on Tuesday.

Musket is a Redoute’s Choice three-quarter brother to Makybe Diva and he stood a sole season at Darley’s Twin Hills Stud in 2009 before transferring to WA the following April.

His Magic Millions sale topper is from LR Tasmanian Guineas winner Di’s Angel (Racer’s Edge).  The mare is owned by local breeder Geoff Hillier and she was already at Darley after missing to Domeday the year before.

The Musket filly has WA links through her second dam Jay’s Girl (Star Way) who is a half-sister to the dams of Sunspeed stakes winners Grand Cavalier (Flying Spur), Cohort (Scenic) and Dark Miss (More Than Ready).

Yarradale owner Ron Sayers bought Musket in partnership with Geisel Park Stud’s Eddie Rigg.  “I had been in negotiations for a new stallion for about three months,” Sayers recalled.  “I was talking to Darley’s Alastair Pulford and he mentioned Musket.  He is a fantastic looking horse and has a pedigree to match.”

Sayers had purchased Scandal Keeper (Danzig) from Darley in 2008 and his first crop includes the very promising Victorian sprinter Zamorar.

Bob Ingham paid a record $2.50 million for Musket at the 2005 Inglis Easter yearling sale.  The three-quarter brother to Makybe Diva was a headline colt from the outset and he hit a career high with a G2 victory over Black Piranha in the Shannon Stakes at Rosehill.

“Musket’s true ability was probably better than his race record showed,” Pulford said.  “He was restricted by the E.I. outbreak but on the strength of his pedigree, is one of the best horses ever to go to West Australia.”

Musket covered 86 mares at Darley in 2009 and another 64 in his first season at Yarradale.  He stands for an $11,000 service fee.
